A list of the top 100 English novels was published by the Modern Library Board on July 20, 1998. It is referred to in literary circles as "the list" the way people from Savannah, GA refer to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil as "the book." The list has been extremely controversial, as these types of things can be, for its omission of certain works such as Gone With the Wind, and Atlas Shrugged, which topped the reader's choice list. It has also been criticized for its less than stellar representation of women and African Americans, and a variety of other reasons, which you can read about here. The project goal is for me to read and briefly summarize all of the works and to choose my favorite quotations from them for this web site.
By clicking on any title you will be given more information about the work and my progress with it, such as: do I own it, have I read it, publication year, character list and synopsis, etc. There will also be pictures of the authors, most of which have been taken from Encarta.
Left: The "king" of the controversial list, James Joyce, has 3 novels on the list including the Ulysses (1), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (3), and Finnegan's Wake(77). Joyce, a native of Ireland, died in 1941.
