csimmons.net :: CFDemo : CSS Print

No doubt you have printed a web page before only to find one or all of the following:

  • Important information was cut off.
  • A single web page has become three or four printed pages that look nothing like the web page.
  • Annoying ads have wasted your precious color ink.

These things happen because web sites are usually designed for viewing, not printing. When users first encountered the annoyances of web printing designers responded with the popular "Printer Friendly" page which was accompanied by this guy: Printer icon. Behind the scenes complicated scripts worked to strip out html tags and render what often amounted to plain text versions of web pages. These scripts were complicated and could cost companies small fortunes to integrate with their sites.

Enter CSS. No "Printer Friendly" script required. This page (and the entire site for that matter) utilize CSS to style for printing. Want to see it? Print this page by clicking your browser's "print" button.

Want to see another example? Go to the resume page and print it.
